Things to Consider when Choosing a Counselor
Choose someone who is located close to your place of residence, preferably the same city, so it will not be difficult for you to attend appointments and have quicker access in case of "emergency" sessions.
Be sure to ask if they take your insurance.
Assure that the counselor's hours of service coincide with the hours you are available for this service. For example, if your child experiences significant academic problems, find a counselor who is available school or weekends.
Choose a counselor whose sex you are comfortable with. For example, if your child has a history of sexual abuse, your child may be more comfortable with a counselor who is not the same sex as the perpetrator.
If after a few session (4 to 8 sessions), you or your child do not feel any connection or are dissatisfied with the counselor, you can always request to be switched to another counselor within the same practice or find a counselor in another practice. You do not have to remain with the first counselor you or your child sees.
